Function / Content
This series comprises a single note book that documents a number of aspects related to the management of prisoners. Subjects covered by the volume include, but are not limited to, prisoner transfers, bail bonds, the calculation of sentence expiry dates, the workings of the "mark system" to enable sentence reduction and pay rates. Entries are mostly in the form of notes, tables or transcriptions of inwards or outwards letters.
Evidence within the volume indicates that the book was maintained by W. Gleeson of Pentridge Prison. According to the the 1916 List of Public Servants Employed in the Public Service, Mr Gleeson was a writer with responsibilities that included maintaining prison stores and issuing rations. It appears the position reported to the prison Clerk whose duties included the writing letters and maintaining records of prisoners. Thus it has been concluded that Mr Gleeson's duties also included providing assistance in these areas and that he created this book as part of these duties.
Only a very few prisoners are identified in this book.
This volume was transferred to PROV during 2010 after it had remained in private hands for a period of at least 35 years.
Recordkeeping System
There is no apparent system of arranegment and control in this book.
