Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Refer to the consignment details to select files of interest.

  • Function / Content
The Melbourne Olympic Committee was a committee with representation from the State Government of Victoria, the Australian Olympic Federation and the City of Melbourne. It was the lead committee for various sub-committees and task groups that included representation from private business and sporting groups. The bid itself was formally conducted by the Melbourne Olympic Candidature 1996 Ltd.

The main objectives of the Melbourne Olympic Committee were to:
    - achieve Melbourne's nomination by the International Olympic Committee in September 1990,
-provide a forum for the various parties contractually involved in supporting or otherwise interested in the bid process and its outcome,
    - develop broad policy guidelines and strategies to provide overall direction of the tasks required to formulate a successful bid,
    - act as a co-ordinating mechanism and source of direction for the various resources available for formulating the bid - comprising of the Secretariat, the various sub-committees, task groups, consultants and volunteers,
    - provide status and prestige to the bid by Melbourne and afford international and local recognition and contact for the various groups active in the bid process,
    - serve as a unifying element in achieving Australia-wide support for the bid by Melbourne.

The records in this series document the administrative and strategic functions of the Committee, including reports, minutes, correspondence, strategies, policies and campaign documents.

The Committee ran from November 1988 to September 1990, when the International Olympic Committee announced that Atlanta had won the race for the 1996 Olympics.

  • Recordkeeping System
The records were created within a corporate recordkeeping system that assigned file numbers based on function, activity and transaction. There are some files which appear to be part of the same system, yet have not retained their corporate file covers or were perhaps never given an official file number despite being similarly arranged. These files were transferred as a separate consignment (see P2) where file numbers were imposed in line with the recordkeeping system utilised by the Committee.

Each number represents a different function, activity and transaction. For example file 4-2-11 means 4 = Campaign Strategy (Function), 2 = Research (Activity), 11 = Reports from Overseas Delegations (Transaction). Some files have multiple parts designated (1, 2, 3 etc.).
