Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
No name indexes are known to have been created for this series. Researchers will need to know the approximate date on which the petition initiating the action was lodged with the court.

  • Function / Content
This register records details regarding probates and administrations granted by a County Court rather than the Supreme Court of Victoria. All applications were for estates valued at less than 500 pounds.

Information in the register includes: case number, date of application, name and last address of deceased, description and value of property, names and addresses of plaintiff and practitioner, defendant or caveator, order or decree and to whom granted, date certificate and will forwarded to Master in Equity, names of obligors, date proceedings remitted to Supreme Court, appeal and results, remarks and date when inventories filed by executors. Many of the latter columns were rarely completed.

This series comprises one of three sequences of registers which, if all used, collectively constitutes the entire County Court Register for the court in question. The three sequences were known as:

County Court Register, Part I, Common Law
County Court Register, Part II, Equity, and
County Court Register, Part III, Probate and Administration.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries were made in these registers in chronological order by date of application. Entries are also identified by a, usually sequential, case number.
