Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The files are arranged in alphabetical order by surname of donor. Refer to the Consignment Details to identify the file required.

  • Function / Content
Most of the conceptions that resulted from donor insemination treatment were from sperm from men whose identities were not known to the recipient couples. The files in this series relate to donors who were known to the recipient couples.

On occasion, couples who otherwise could not conceive a child arranged for a relative (such as the brother of the husband) or a friend to donate sperm for use in infertility treatment. In this way, the identities of the donors were known to the couples who conceived.

If a 'known donor' were named in the patient treatment file (VPRS 14965 Infertility Treatment Patient Records), the researcher may wish to see the file for the donor for further information.

In relation to the 'known' donors, details in the files include: name, date of birth, country of birth, marital status, number of children, physical characteristics, parents of the donor, relationship to the woman who received the sperm, and name of the recipient (mother of infant).

  • Recordkeeping System
The files were arranged in alphabetical order by surname of donor. Numbers were seen on the covers of some of the files, however most files in the series did not have numbers on the file covers. (Further research is required.)
