  • How to use the Records
    This series provides reference to selected files created by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723) between 1906 and 1958 which due to top-numbering, amalgamation, re-activation and re-registration were difficult to trace.

    This series allows tracking of a limited number of correspondence/files and effectively should be treated as the last resort in the search for files relevant to your research and used only when all other steps have failed.

    Firstly, it is recommended to check all other available options:

    1. For correspondence registered between 1906 - 1927
    (contents dating back to 1860)

    Consult the descriptive text for VPRS 3844 General Correspondence Files (Alphabetically Re-arranged Inactive Portion of VPRS 6008 - pre 1928 Files), Single Number System for information about the contents and arrangement of this series. Refer to the Records Description List and locate the file of interest.

    2. For correspondence registered between 1906 (due to top-numbering , files registered as 1928 onwards) - 1958
    (contents dating back to 1860)

    Consult the descriptive text for VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number Systems and follow instructions listed in the How to Use the Records section.

    In case the above-listed searches prove fruitless, refer to cards comprising this series to identify if the file of interest was top-numbered, amalgamated with another file or re-activated and re-registered, note the reference file number noted on the card and locate the file by following the steps described above.

  • Function / Content
    This series appears to have been created by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723) in the early 1970s in order to facilitate tracking the location and top-numbering of files. It appears to have been maintained by the agency as a handy retrieval tool eliminating the need to tediously search for files using a number of other controlling records.

    The information recorded on these cards included: movement details, final location, top-numbering and amalgamation of files, which were later serialised as VPRS 3844 General Correspondence Files (Alphabetically Re-arranged Inactive Portion of VPRS 6008 - pre 1928 Files), Single Number System and VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number Systems.

    This series was maintained by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and its administrative successor, the Rural Water Commission (VA 2338) till 1987.

  • Recordkeeping System
    This series consists of two sequences of cards:
    1. 1860 - 1927, PRO series 3844
    2. 1928 - 1958, PRO series 6008
    The Records Description List clearly identifies these sequences.
    Cards are arranged in file number order which by default (annual single number system) is a chronological arrangement.
