How to use the Records
For details concerning the appointments to the Public Service within the Department of Public Works, consult the appropriate index, as listed below, for details of vacancies, new appointments and individuals appointed.
Function / Content
The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply.
This series contains letter-press copies of the memoranda sent to the Executive Council for ratification as Orders-in-Council for appointment of officers as Public Service employees of the Department or for salary adjustments and for promotions of Public Service staff.
Recordkeeping System
All memoranda have been given an annual single number and entries are in numericakl order. The contents of the volume are indexed under three headings:
Applications for appointments to fill vacancies listed with the vacancy name and the folio (or page) upon which the notice appears.
Applications for new appointments - listed with the vacancy name and the folio (or page) upon which the notice appears.
Appointments listed by the name of the appointee and the folio (or (page) upon which the memorandum appears.
