  • How to use the Records
    Consult the Consignment Details.

For details of specific applicants and/or runs it is necessary to know the district. When the district is known, consult the index at the front of the volume.

  • Function / Content
The Order in Council 1847 divided New South Wales, which included the Port Phillip District into Unsettled, Intermediate and Settled Districts for the purpose of pastoral occupation. Leases for up to fourteen years could be obtained in the Unsettled Districts, for up to eight years in the Intermediate Districts and for one year in the Settled Districts. Rents were to be proportional to the carrying capacity of the land with ten pounds per annum being the minimum.

This series contains the details of applications for leases of pastoral runs and of runs obtained by Tender. Details given are the registered number, the names of the applicant and the run, dates of reference to the Sub-Treasurer and of advertisement in the Government Gazette, details of any caveats and decisions regarding them , the name of any person that the lease is applied for in favour of and of measurements and assessments.

  • Recordkeeping System
Sections are allocated for each district within the Port Phillip District. Entries within each section are in chronological order. An index at the front gives the pages upon which entries for each district commence.
