Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Consignment Details to identify the unit containing the project files of interest.

  • Function / Content
This series documented various engineering projects undertaken by the Railway Construction Branch of the Board of Land and Works (VA 690) from 1914 and 1965 and the Railway Construction Board VA 691 from 1965 to 1968. Projects included the building of bridges, culverts and other structures required for railway transport. Including:
    - Engineering records such as notes and algebraic calculations for testing the component parts of structures and clearance surveys
    - Plans, drawings, final designs, deflectometer and strainmeter tests (for testing the strength of bridges while carrying locomotives) and compression tests for concrete conducted by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723)
    - Cost and project estimates and material quantity tables,
    - Earthwork quantity estimates for the Tallarook to Mansfield; Wodonga to Cudgewa; and Wodonga to Tallangatta lines and
    - Contract and general correspondence.

  • Recordkeeping System
The files in the P1 consignment were arranged under a two number system. Each project was given a unique identifier with each sub or section file following in a suffix driven sequence, eg 100/1, 100/2, 100/3, etc. For a given project, 100/1 may be estimates for 1952; 100/2 may be estimates for 1953, etc.

The files in the P2 consignment were arranged in single number order.

The files in the P3 consignment were arranged by subject title.

No control records were identified at the time of the transfer of this consignment. Further research is required to document the record keeping system.
