Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Consignment Details for the unit containing the date range for which information is required.

For information regarding specific individulas or localities, consult the alphabetical index at the front of each volume.

  • Function / Content
The volumes in this series primarily contain the Minute Books of the Surveyor-General. Correspondence regarding lands and surveys was received by the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District and, later, the Colonial Secretary with it being registered in VPRS 18 Inward Correspondence Registers and VPRS 1186 Inward Correspondence Registers I. It was then referred to the Surveyor-General to provide the information for a response where necessary.

The details provided in these volumes are the date of the original piece of correspondence, the registered number assigned in the Superintendent's or Colonial Secretary's registration system, the name of the original correspondent, the date and number of the reference, and a summary of the subject of the original correspondence. This is followed by a transcription of the minute placed on the correspondence by the forwarding official and then a transcription of the response by the Surveyor-General and finally the dates of reception and return by the Surveyor-General. Referred correspondence dealt with such subjects as applications to purchase land or to exercise a pre-emptive right, surveys for roads and requests for the building of roads and bridges, matters relating to the erection or extension of public buildings such as police premises, the schedules and necessary arrangements for public auctions, requests for grants of land for Church purposes, the survey of township sites, boundary disputes and personnel matters related to the administration of the lands function. Responses to the original correspondents may be able to be found in VPRS 122 Outward Letter Books.

The first and second volumes in this series also contain an inwards correspondence register (from 21 Jul 1851 to 31 Aug 1853) for direct correspondence from the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District and the Colonial Secretary to the Surveyor-General. Details given are the name of the correspondent, the date and number of the letter, the date of reception and answer, the number of the letter (the outwards reference of the Superintendent and Colonial Secretary) and a description of the subject of the letter. Letters deal with such matters as land sales, the survey of land for roads, town sites and sales and administrative matters. Copies of these letters may be found in VPRS 16 Outward Letter Books to Local and Sydney and VPRS 122 Outward Letter Books.

VPRS 1329 was previously registered with the title Registry Book. The title was altered in 2002.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries are in chronological order for both the Minute Book and the Inwards Correspondence Register.

The Minute Book is alphabetically indexed by the family name of original correspondents and the names of localities to which letters refer.
