Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Consignment Details for the volume containing the records for the required time period. Consult the alphabetical index of counties and parishes at the front of the volume for information relating to a specific area or property.

  • Function / Content
Under the Waste Lands Act 1842 and the regulations made consequent upon it, all Crown Land for sale in the colony had to first be offered at public auction for the minimum upset price of one pound an acre. If the land was not sold at auction, it could then be offered for sale by private contract. Purchasers at auction were required to pay a deposit at the time of the auction as fixed by proclamation with the remainder of the purchase price paid within one calendar month. If this did not occur, the deposit was forfeited and the lands might be sold by private contract.

The Selection Books in this series deals with lands in the categories of Country Lots and Special Country Lots (lands offered for sale at auction for a higher upset price than one pound per acre), previously offered at auction, that were now being offered for private sale. Details given are whether the land was a Country Lot or a Special Country lot, the date of the proclamation (that they were to be auctioned), the date when the land was offered for sale, the parish in which it was located, the allotment and portion or section, the extent (in acres, roods and perches), the price per acre and the total amount, the deposit which had been forfeited (or whether the there had been no original offer), the date of selection (for purchase) and the name of the ultimate purchaser.

Much of the information in this series, particularly that for the period after 1853, is replicated in VPRS 13019 Register of Land Offered for Selection After Forfeiture of Deposit on Land Unsold at Auction. It may have been copied into that series. A number of entries have been crossed through. This may have been done at the time of copying or may have been for another reason.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries are arranged by County and where there was no county declared, by district. Counties are alphabetically indexed at the front of the volume with parishes in that county for which records exist listed below.

Applications to select this land may be able to be found in VPRS 86 Applications to Select Land Unsold at Auction or After Forfeiture of Deposit.
