How to use the Records
Consult the alphabetical index of localities (primarily parishes) at the front of the volume for land in a specific locality.
Function / Content
Under the Waste Lands Act 1842 and the regulations made consequent upon it, all Crown Land for sale in the colony had to first be offered at public auction for the minimum upset price of one pound an acre. If the land was not sold at auction, it could then be offered for sale by private contract. Purchasers at auction were required to pay a deposit at the time of the auction as fixed by proclamation with the remainder of the purchase price paid within one calendar month. If this did not occur, the deposit was forfeited and the lands might be sold by private contract.
The Register in this series deals with lands in the categories of Country Lots and Special Country Lots (lands offered for sale at auction for a higher upset price than one pound per acre) where lands, previously offered at auction, were now being offered for private sale. Details given are whether the land was a Country Lot or a Special Country lot, the date of the proclamation (that they were to be auctioned), the date when the land was offered for sale, the parish in which it was located, the allotment and portion or section, the extent (in acres, roods and perches), the price per acre and the total amount, the deposit which had been forfeited (or whether there had been no original offer), the date of selection (for purchase) and the name of the purchaser.
Details of auctions may be found in VPRS 80 Auctioneers Reports of Land Sales at Public Auction and applications to select (or purchase Crown Land by private contract) may be found in VPRS 86 Applications to Select Land.
This series may not have been created until 1856 as much of the early records in the volume are a replication of records in VPRS 13029 Selection Books.
Recordkeeping System
Entries are in the order in which sections of land were offered for public auction. An alphabetical index of parishes (and Districts and Counties) is at the front of the volume.
