  • How to use the Records
Consult this series to obtain the registration number or file number of Inward Correspondence Files (VPRS 1163), received in the period c.1883-c.1893. Entries are arranged alphabetically by subject. For each subject category, the registration numbers for items of inward correspondence are recorded, along with a brief description of the contents of each item.

The file number is an annual single number, eg 86/445. A letter with this registration number would be the 445th item of inward correspondence registered in the year 1886.

Once you have the file number, consult the Records Description List for VPRS 1163 to see whether this number is listed, and if so, note the relevant unit number to obtain the record.

If the file number is not listed on the RDL for VPRS 1163, it may be necessary to consult VPRS 1164 Registers of Inward Correspondence (1883-1917) in order to find the number of the most recent item on the correspondence file. This top number will be the file number under which the item has been filed in VPRS 1163.

(There also exists a Card Index to Premier's Correspondence located in the Laverton search room (c1887 1917), in which inward correspondence files in VPRS 1163 are indexed alphabetically by subject. The provenance and accuracy of this series is unknown.)

If the file number you have obtained from the Index or Register is not listed in VPRS 1163, ask the Reference Archivist for some assistance.

For more information on how to find the records you want, consult the series text for VPRS 1163.

  • Function / Content
This series is an alphabetical subject index to inward correspondence received by the Premiers Department. In the recordkeeping system used by this agency, each item of correspondence received was registered in VPRS 1164, and an annual sequential number (file number) was allocated to it. Documents were subsequently indexed by subject, with the index entry recording the file number and a brief precis of the contents.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries are arranged alphabetically by subject. Particular items of correspondence are indexed under major subject headings, such as Public Library, Legislative Assembly.

For each item of correspondence indexed, the registration number assigned to the correspondence is recorded, along with a brief precis of the contents.

In some cases, a cross-reference to the page number of another entry in another subject category within the index is given instead of the file number.
