Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
This series lists all Cabinet submissions made from 1982 to 1992 and Cabinet Committee submissions from 1987 to 1992.

Searching by keyword, Minister/portfolio or date in the spreadsheet will allow you to identify a submission number.

Once you have obtained the submission number, refer to VPRS 11944 Cabinet and Cabinet Committee Submissions to identify the particular Cabinet submission record of interest.

  • Function / Content
This series comprises of a register of Cabinet and Cabinet Committee submissions. It was established as a database in circa 1987 by Cabinet Office to replace a manual system of registration (see VPRS 11945 Register of Cabinet Submissions and VPRS 11943 Register of Submissions to Cabinet Committees).

Submissions from 1982 to 1992 were entered into the database which has since been extracted and converted into an MS Excel spreadsheet.

Fields recorded in the database (and featured in the spreadsheet) include:
    - submission number
    - Minister/portfolio
    - date received
    - title.

Please note that there are some discrepancies evident in the data such as incomplete fields or incorrect dates which are most likely a result of human error during the data entry process.

  • Recordkeeping System
The Cabinet submissions database ran on a stand-alone computer using Prime software. This computer also ran a database to register Cabinet decisions, see VPRS 11955 Register of Cabinet Decisions (Database Output), Cain-Kirner.

Upon receipt of a submission, the Cabinet Office registered it into the database and assigned it a submission number which was written on the submission.

The database was introduced to manage a backlog of submissions dating from 1982 and could run basic keyword searching and generate reports.

The subsequent Kennett Government opted to cease using the Prime system in favour of an IBM Lotus Notes system.
