Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Researchers should consult the consignment details to determine the unit number relating to the correspondence subject they require.

  • Function / Content
This series consists of general correspondence files maintained by the Governors Office at Fairlea Womens Prison from 1956 to1996. Some correspondence and papers exist from as early as 1905 but these would date from the time when the womens prison was located within Pentridge. No other correspondence relating to the operation of a womens prison in Victoria appears to have survived.

The files contain inwards correspondence, copies of outwards correspondence, internal memoranda and other papers relating to the functions of the Governors Office. A large portion of this series relates to the administration of prisoners and the prison itself. Other material includes correspondence relating to matters such as the activities of various committees, and correspondence with the Government Department responsible for administering prisons.

  • Recordkeeping System
Although other prisons such as Pentridge began to register their correspondence according to a subject classification code in the early 1970s, this does not seem to have occurred at Fairlea.

It appears that all files were unregistered and correspondence was grouped together according to subject matter.

The files within this series have been processed according to the original order that the files were arranged within the Governors Office. Similar subject matters (such as correspondence with the Office of Corrections) are listed together on the consignment details.

The contents of each file are arranged chronologically according to date of correspondence.
