Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
There are no indexes to this series. To locate records about a particular subject or agency peruse the records description list.

It is likely that material in this series is related to or will be complemented by other series which were transferred to the Public Record Office from the Rural Water Corporation library. Twenty-seven such series were transferred to the Public Record Office in 1995. Researchers should consult the agency registrations for relevant Irrigation Trusts and Water Trusts, the Victorian Water Supply Department (VA 2787), the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723), the Rural Water Commission (VA 2338) and the Rural Water Corporation (VA 4234) to identify the other series.

  • Function / Content
This series was accumulated by the library of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, the Rural Water Commission and the Rural Water Corporation and kept for the purpose of historical research.

The series contains newspaper clippings, copies of internal and published reports, and copies of legislation, speeches and correspondence covering a wide range of subjects. There are also some original items throughout the series. Some of the items relate to waterworks trusts and other agencies and activities which existed prior to the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. It appears that the oldest item in the series was created in 1881.

  • Recordkeeping System
Records in this series appear to have been accumulated by Commissioners or senior officers of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and senior officers of the Rural Water Commission. It is likely that some of the older items were inherited from the Victorian Water Supply Department, which was the previous agency to the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission.

It appears that when Commissioners or senior officers left the agency the subject or reference files which they had created for their individual reference were deposited in the library.

All original recordkeeping systems that individual Commissioners or senior officers used to control the records in their offices was lost when the records were transferred to the library. The library appears to have rearranged at least some of the records into a retrieval system based on subject. There is also evidence on some records that other control systems were used as well. These other systems included the Dewey library classification system, an alphabetical subject system and a single number system.

All library-based systems were in turn lost when the records were removed from the library collection and transferred to the Public Record Office in 1995.

The P1 consignment includes copies of records and reference material gathered by some individual officers and rearranged into subject groupings by the library. The P2 consignment comprises records created or received by Stuart Murray. Stuart Murray was a former Chief Engineer of Water Supply who became the first Chairman of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission.
Stuart Murray's papers in the P2 consignment comprise notebooks of evidence given to the Royal Commission on Water Supply 1884 (see VPRS 11184 Royal Commissions and Inquiries Records) and Inspection Notes.
The P3 consignment comprises mainly departmental newsletters, news releases and reports on water resources and supply (see also VPRS 11187 Reports (Library Set)).
