Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The files are arranged in single number order and chronological by financial year. Use the list of authorised file classifications (VPRS 11163) to identify the number of the file you are interested in. Use the index to correspondence (VPRS 11163) identify the specific items of correspondence placed on each file.

  • Function / Content
The Government Statists position was created in 1873 for the purpose of compiling and publishing statistical information. The Office of the Government Statist (VA 989) took over the function from the Registrar-General and was responsible for the registry, statistical and actuarial functions of the State. The Office of the Government Statist and Actuary is constituted under the Statistics Act 1958.

This series comprises general files which contain incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to the activities of the office. Separate files were created for each organisation coming in contact with the Office of the Government Statist and for select subjects.

  • Recordkeeping System
The correspondence files in this series are arranged in numerical order according to a single number filing system and in chronological order by financial year. A sequential number was allocated to each file category, usually a correspondent or subject. Files were then created each financial year using those numbers. A list of authorised file classifications was created to provide access to the files by file category (like an alphabetical index of files) and by file number (like a file register). The list of authorised file classifications (see VPRS 11163) indicated that changes were made to the numbers of some of the files during the 1965/66 financial year.

Details about the receipt and despatch of items of inward and outward correspondence were recorded in volumes from 1944 to 1989 and on cards from 1989 to 1990. The correspondence was listed under the file headings which are arranged in alphabetical order. Under each file heading a separate record of inward and outward letters was maintained. This record of correspondence was known as the Index to Letters (see VPRS 11163).
