Description of this Series
How to use the Records
For information relating to a specific locality determine whether it is in the County of Grant or County of Bourke. Within the appropriate volume consult the alphabetical index of localities at the front of the volume.
Function / Content
This series records the purchasers of land in towns offered at auction by the Crown. The first unit records purchasers in the County of Bourke (centred on Melbourne) and the second unit records purchasers in the County of Grant (centred on Geelong).
Space is given for the recording of the allotment (given as a number), the section (a number), the area (given in acres, roods and perches), the names of purchasers, the dates upon which the land was gazetted (as being for sale) and sold, remarks and the number of the plan. Records of sales were recorded from the Sale Book with those details being noted in the register. Land granted or reserved for special purposes (such as churches, schools or reserves) was indicated.
Details of grants for these special purposes might be found in VPRS 81 Deeds for Special Purposes Land Grants. Further details of the land and of its sale may be found for 1852 in VPRS 873 Notice of Land Sales for Auction.
Recordkeeping System
Entries in each volume are in chronological order. Each volume has an alphabetical index of localities (towns or parishes) at the front of the volume.
For each land auction, allotments and sections are listed in numerical order.
