|Description of this GroupDescription of this Group|
In 1872 a Minister of Agriculture was appointed and assumed responsibility for functions previously administered by the Chief Secretary (VRG 26). A Department of Agriculture (VA 618) was also established in 1872, initially as a branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538), but in 1882 it became a department in its own right.
Following the re-election of the Kennett Government in April 1996 the Agriculture portfolio was merged with parts of the Natural Resources and Energy and Minerals portfolios to form a new Agriculture and Resources portfolio. The Minister for Agriculture was succeeded by the Minister for Agriculture and Resources (VRG 122).
