Following the re-election of the Kennett Government in April 1996 a Planning and Local Government portfolio was established with the appointment of a Minister for Planning and Local Government. This portfolio comprises the whole of the former Planning (VRG 65) and Local Government (VRG 57) portfolios and parts of the Arts (VRG 61), Housing (VRG 106) and Finance (VRG 100) portfolios.

Responsibility for the Major Projects (VRG 92) portfolio also passed to the Minister for Planning and Local Government.
