The Trustees of the Public Library, Museums and the National Gallery of Victoria were appointed under the provisions of An Act to provide for the incorporation and government of the Public Library, Museums and the National Gallery of Victoria 1869 (33 Vict. No.357). The Governor-in-Council was to appoint not less than fifteen trustees.
The trustees were to have the management and control of the Public Library of Victoria, the Industrial and Technological Museum (VA 1411), the National Museum of Victoria (VA 431) and the National Gallery of Victoria (VA 930).
After 1944 separate trustee bodies for each institution were established to undertake the role and functions previously administered by this agency, see Trustees of the National Gallery (VA 3119).
