The Port of Melbourne Corporation commenced operations on 1 July 2003.
The Port of Melbourne Corporation owns and manages the land and berths in the Port of Melbourne and the commercial navigation channels in the port waters. It is responsible for the planning and development of the port, shipping control and channel management in Port Phillip Bay facilitating trade and commerce for the economic benefit of the State. It also manages the Station Pier.
The Port of Melbourne Corporation took over responsibilities of the former Melbourne Port Corporation VA 4837, which ceased operations on 30 June 2003, and, from 3 November 2003, the Victorian Channels Authority VA 4027, in relation to the channels and port waters of the Port of Melbourne.
