The Small Business Development Corporation is a body corporate constituted under the provisions of the Small Business Development Corporation Act 1976, proclaimed on 8June 1976. The Act was amended in 1986 to expand on the functions and objectives of the Corporation. During the first half of 1993 the Corporation took on the trading name Small Business Victoria.
Small Business Victoria was abolished in 1996, by the Small Business Victoria (Repeal) Act 1996, assented to on 26 November 1996. Its operations were integrated into the Department of State Development. Small Business Victoria branding and name were maintained under the new arrangement. The changes stemmed from a review commissioned by the corporation's board. The review was undertaken by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.
